Your AC coils work hard to transfer heat out of your home, helping you stay cool efficiently. However, over time, dirt, dust, pollen, and debris build up on both the evaporator and condenser coils. If left unchecked, this buildup restricts airflow, reduces energy efficiency, and strains your system. Eventually, it may cause expensive breakdowns.

Safety First Before You Begin

Before doing anything, always turn off power to your AC unit at the thermostat and the breaker box. This step prevents electric shock and keeps you safe while cleaning. Use gloves and protective eyewear, especially if using chemical cleaners.

Step-by-Step Coil Cleaning Guide

1. Locate the Coils

You’ll find evaporator coils inside the indoor unit (often in the air handler) and condenser coils in the outdoor unit. Remove the access panel or protective grille if necessary.

2. Remove Loose Debris

Use a soft brush or a vacuum with a brush attachment to gently remove surface dust and debris. For outdoor coils, you can also use a garden hose (never a pressure washer).

3. Apply Coil Cleaner

You can use a no-rinse foaming coil cleaner (for evaporator coils) or a commercial outdoor coil cleaner (for condenser coils). Spray evenly and let it sit per the instructions. The foam will lift dirt as it expands.

4. Rinse Carefully

For condenser coils, rinse thoroughly with a hose after the cleaner has worked. Do not spray electrical components. For evaporator coils, many no-rinse formulas simply drain away through the condensate line.

5. Reassemble and Restore Power

Once everything is clean and dry, replace any covers or grilles. Then, restore power and turn your system back on to check performance.

When to Call a Professional

Even though cleaning at home can help, sometimes buildup is severe or access is limited. Additionally, if your coils freeze, leak, or your AC continues to underperform, it’s best to call a professional technician for a full inspection and service.
